Nick Vannett is the second Ohio State tight end to be drafted in as many years from a position that the Buckeyes have not been known for through recent memory.

CHICAGO – Are the tides turning at the tight end position for the Buckeyes? Nick Vannett is the second tight end to be drafted from Ohio State in as many years as the Westerville (Ohio) product just saw his name come off the board to the Seattle Seahawks with the No. 94 overall pick in the 3rd round.

He now joins former teammate Jeff Heuerman who was taken in the 3rd round by the Denver Broncos in the 2015 draft.

Nobody is going mistake the Ohio State offense as being one that leans heavily on the tight end as an offensive weapon but that has not stopped NFL teams from taking notice of the athletes that have been coming through Columbus as of late.

Vannett played in 53 games during his four-year Ohio State career and started 15 of those games. He had 55 receptions, including 19 in both 2014 and 2015 for a career total of 585 yards and six touchdowns, with five of them coming in 2014.

The new Seahawk had a stellar performance at the 2016 Senior Bowl and that got him some valuable face time in front of the NFL scouts and the NFL media and Vannett started to make his ascension up the draft boards.

"Vannett's combination of size and athleticism will be very attractive to teams in search of a combination tight end who can stay on the field and operate from a variety of personnel groupings and formations," said Lance Zierlein of NFL.com on Vannett's draft profile. "Vannett will need to embrace his size and become more aggressive as a blocker, but his athleticism and pass catching ability could turn him into a safety blanket for a quarterback in need of a big, safe target."

Vannett is the 10th Buckeye to be drafted so far and won't be the last.
