COLUMBUS, Ohio- Coach Urban Meyer awarded two seniors who make an impact on special teams, Zach Turnure and Elijaah Goins, after Ohio State’s Saturday scrimmage.
Walking on as a safety, Goins has moved around some. He was moved to corner then moved to receiver prior to his junior season, both because of his speed.
However, Goins has found a stable position on the special teams. Playing a position knows as “The Five” to Meyer, he plays a pivotal role on all four units of special teams., kickoffs, punts and both returns.

To Goins, despite working for this, it still does not feel real to receive a scholarship.
“It still felt like a dream, honestly,” Goins said. “For years and years, I have been working my ass off trying to do everything I can for this team.
Turnure’s story is very unique. Coming into freshman year, he was on scholarship to play lacrosse at Ohio State. However, after missing football, he turned down the scholarship and walked on to the football team before the 2014 season.
From going from the lacrosse team to the special teams unit, Turnure views this scholarship as affirmation for his decision.
“It felt like all the hard work, that decision I had made, the whole journey along the way was totally worth it,” Turnure said. “It was just an amazing feeling.”
Starting middle linebacker Chris Worley has seen how much Tunure has grown throughout his experience of earning his scholarship.
“It was cool, especially for me seeing a guy like Zach, being in my unit room, hanging out with him outside of football as much as I do,” Worley said. “It’s nice to see his hard work being rewarded.”
The linebacker position room has a history of producing walk-ons that make a difference for the team. Turnure talked about how Joe Burger and Craig Fada were huge in his development.
“They were huge role models for me because, being a walk on, its obviously not easy,” Turnure said. “To be able to see them progress and earn a scholarship, earn a spot on the team, that was huge for me as far as my motivation to continue on and really push.”
Even for a player that has moved around as much as Goins has, Fada and Burger were still Goins’ examples on the team.
“They are definitely my idols,” Goins said. “They kind of set the tone and we still look up to them. It is definitely possible that someone like me can earn a scholarship if I keep working my tail off and doing everything I can.”
To Meyer, awarding scholarships to who he thinks are deserving players is one of the best parts of his job.
“I always tell our team, there's things I have to do that I can't stand, and that's when a guy makes a stupid decision or just deal with nonsense,” Meyer said. “This is my favorite decision.”
