COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Although he was no longer in a coaching role after putting the whistle around Ryan Day’s neck upon his retirement after the Rose Bowl in 2019, Urban Meyer still had that itch to get back to the sidelines.

The decorated football coach admitted as much during his Jacksonville Jaguars introductory press conference on January 15, which will be Meyer’s first head-coaching gig above the collegiate level. But if his word isn’t enough, the Buckeyes themselves saw as much when Meyer remained as assistant athletics director involved with athletics initiatives and relations.

During Ohio State’s Pro Day on Tuesday, right guard Wyatt Davis said he’s excited to see what Meyer does at the professional level, and that he may have had an inkling that Meyer would get back into coaching.

“I know when he’d come down here and talk to us you could just tell he still had that competitive spirit,” Davis said. “I’m really excited that he got back into football. I’m really excited to see what he does at this level and I also wouldn’t mind playing for him as well.”

Meyer sits in favorable position as head coach of the Jaguars as they own the No. 1 pick in the upcoming 2021 NFL draft.

While many mock drafts project Jacksonville to select Clemson Heisman Finalist Trevor Lawrence, perhaps the former Buckeyes head coach was getting the inside scoop as he was seen talking with Day on several occasions. In fact, Day admitted that the pair were going to spend even more time together Tuesday afternoon.

“It was great to see him here. I know all the players he recruited and former players who were here and all the people who work in the building were happy to see him, giving him hugs,” Day said. “We talk so often. It was great to see him and catch up with him.”

Perhaps Meyer’s conversations with Day and others of his former Buckeyes players were just checking in with one another, but it still left a lot to be taken away as plenty of Buckeyes will likely be available as the draft shakes out.

Linebacker Justin Hilliard, who was recruited by Meyer’s staff in 2015, said he talked with his former head coach for a decent while during Pro Day, but “most of it wasn’t really even about the game of football.”

“Coach Meyer is one of the most influential coaches I’ve ever been with. Really we were just catching up on the time we missed together,” Hilliard said. “As far as moving forward, obviously it would be cool to play with coach Meyer just because I know what he brings to the table and the culture he brings. When he was here, I believe I was the best special teams player in the country for two or three years straight. He knows plenty about me.”

Linemen Josh Myers and Tommy Togiai echoed similar messages about their familiarity with Meyer and his coaching style. Both said they’d love an opportunity to be part of Meyer’s next venture at the NFL level.

Defensive end Jonathon Cooper was animated at the thought of getting drafted by Meyer and Jacksonville. Cooper said having known Meyer from their tenures in Columbus may sway the coach in the fact that Meyer has seen the way each of his players have worked.

“I would love to reunite with coach Meyer down in Jacksonville,” Cooper said. “I feel like that would be amazing, and I would do whatever he asked of me. I don’t see coach Meyer not being successful anywhere that he goes.

“I think he’s gonna kill the NFL the same way he killed college, and I think he’s gonna turn the whole entire program around.”

Linebacker Pete Werner said many of his position-group teammates spoke with Meyer and were picking the coach's brain, calling Meyer "a great resource to have."

After the Pro Day dust settled, one can only wonder if Buckeyes prospects have favor from Meyer. Werner and others said there may be an edge, but only time will tell if the Jacksonville Jaguars develop more of a 'Jacksonville Buckeyes' feel.

“I think we do just because he’s seen all of our work. He knows the culture here at Ohio State,” Werner said. “He knows how we work. I think that him seeing us today in-person clarified it for the rest of his staff.

“I do think we might have an edge, but you never know."
