The newest College Football Playoff rankings were released on Tuesday night and were largely dwarfed by election returns as the United States holds a presidential election along with many other major offices on a statewide level.

College football fans, especially Ohio State fans however wanted to keep an eye on the latest CFP rankings, especially coming off the heels of a 62-3 win over then-No. 10 ranked Nebraska last week. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 6 last week, the first week of the 2016 CFP rankings and were hoping for a major move here in week two.

Well, last week Texas A&M got special credit for some quality wins and getting the nod over Washington. In typical CFP fashion, the goalposts moved again and Washington's schedule did not get all that much more impressive and Ohio State's still is impressive, so the Buckeyes get the nod, right?

Wrong.

Ohio State is now No. 5 in the CFP rankings through week two of the rankings.

Of course these rankings mean nothing with three more weeks of the regular season followed up by conference championship games in many conferences. The final CFP rankings will have the top-four teams and will determine who is off to the playoffs, this year with the semi-finals at the Fiesta and Peach Bowls with the winners going on to Tampa (Fla.) to play for the championship.

The Buckeyes have two games against teams with losing records and that won't play a role in terms of being ranked here in November with Maryland and Michigan State. But the season finale with Michigan is the game that many people are looking forward to and could be one of the biggest games of the season if an undefeated Michigan and a one-loss Ohio State team meet up playing for a berth in the B1G Championship Game and their CFP candidacy.

The Big Ten had five teams ranked in this edition of the CFP rankings with three weeks to go. The next set of rankings will come out on next Tuesday and the Buckeyes are hoping to move up again after Saturday's game with Maryland.

Just for a little historical perspective, at this point of the 2014 season, nine games into the season the Buckeyes ranked No. 8 in the CFP rankings. As we all know, the Buckeyes did not climb into the top-four until the final rankings and there were some tense moments of waiting, even after a 59-0 dismantling of Wisconsin in the B1GCG.
