Everybody knew that Urban Meyer was serious about making some changes after the conclusion of the 2016 football season and it appears that those changes are starting now. Out is Tim Beck (Texas) and in are Ryan Day and potentially Kevin Wilson.
Reports first surfaced that Tim Beck will be heading to Texas to join former Ohio State offensive coordinator and new head coach Tom Herman in Austin with the Longhorns. The staff have our Rivals.com affiliate in Texas, Orangebloods.com have confirmed a report that was first reported by Chip Brown.
Ohio State confirmed the departure of Beck to pursue other opportunities later in a release.
Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports was next up to report that former Meyer GA Ryan Day is expected to join the Ohio State staff in an offensive capacity that would carry a title of coordinator and also work with the quarterbacks. Day worked on Chip Kelly's staff with the 49ers and with the Philadelphia Eagles. Before that Day was an offensive coordinator under former Meyer disciple, Steve Addazio at Boston College.
Ohio State would confirm the hiring of Day by way of press release stating the move was pending a background check and that his duties would in fact revolve around the quarterbacks.
The 37-year-old Day played football at the University of New Hampshire under Kelly before getting his first taste of coaching under Meyer at Florida in 2005 where he served as a Graduate Assistant.
Also very much in the rumor mill is potential news that Kevin Wilson could also be on his way to Columbus for a spot on the Meyer staff. We first reported before Christmas that Wilson had interviewed with Meyer and the Buckeyes and if the reports are true, it appears that something could be in play for the former Indiana head coach.
The Wilson move could have to wait until April when the NCAA is expected to pass a measure that would allow teams to have a 10th assistant coach on staff if nobody else is to depart from the Ohio State staff. There is a lot of time between now and then however and Wilson could be named in a different capacity between now and then and then elevated to that position if Ohio State wants to lock him up before that vote. This of course is all speculation but what is not uncertain is Meyer's respect for Wilson as a coach and potential desire to bring him in to help tear down and rebuild the Ohio State offense.
In a strange twist of events, if Wilson joins the staff, his first two games would be against former schools of his with Indiana (former head coach) and Oklahoma (former coordinator).
We will have more on this breaking news as things are confirmed, change or anything else materializes.
