COLUMBUS, Ohio- When it was announced that Urban Meyer, the head coach of the Ohio State football team, was going to be suspended following the findings of an Independent Investigatory Council, people weren't sure who was going to assume the head coaching duties until Meyer's return.
It was announced shortly after that quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day would be the acting head coach for the first three games of the season. Questions surrounded the Buckeye team, mostly about Meyer, but others about Day's ability to have his players focused, ready for the start of the season and have the Buckeyes in the best possible spot when Meyer came back.
It is now game week four with Tulane on the horizon and the Buckeyes sit at a record 3-0 with Meyer set to coach his first game of the season. Defensive coordinator Greg Schiano spoke to how the coaching staff leaned on each other in Meyer's absence, all while Day stepped up in a big way in a time of need.
"In a bad situation, I think everybody took on a little more and did a little bit more to try and help [Meyer] fill that void," Schiano said after practice Wednesday. "In any group dynamic, there needs to be the leader. I think Ryan stepped up and did a tremendous job."
