Wesson talks decision to stay home

It seemed inevitable when Ohio State offered local legacy prospect Andre Wesson that the 6-foot-6 wing would stay at home with the Buckeyes. On Wednesday afternoon, the Westerville South star made it official, committing to and signing with the Buckeyes.

"I made the decision late last night," said Wesson. "After I talked to my parents and everything it was pretty solid in my mind that it was going to be Ohio State."

Having the decision out of the way was a relief to Wesson who will now follow in his father, Keith's, footsteps and dawn the Scarlet and Gray.

"It feels great," he said. "Any kid that grows up in Columbus, Ohio wants that Ohio State offer. That's all you see is Ohio State and it felt really great getting that offer, it felt special."

His commitment also means that he'll get to continue to play with his brother, Kaleb, at the next level. The two led Westerville South to the state championship in March and though they'll spend next year apart, getting a chance to reunite when Kaleb arrives in 2017 means a lot to the family.

"It's going to be special," he said. "It's definitely something that we've talked about for a long time. Just for it to finally happen, it means a lot to us."

The recruitment of the Wesson's sort of went in reverse order for the Buckeyes. It was younger brother Kaleb who saw his stock soar very early on, while Andre was a late bloomer who took off as a senior.

"I have a lot of confidence in myself and it showed down the stretch this year," he explained. "I really have a lot of confidence and the whole time I believed that I am a high-major Division I prospect."

The hope for Andre is that the two can combine to have the same level of immense success that they had at South. The idea of winning more championships was something he talked with Thad Matta about on Tuesday evening.

"When I talked to (the Ohio State coaches) yesterday we talked about winning a National Championship," he recalled. "That's what I really liked. I really liked winning a state championship and that made me get the feeling that I want more."

Wesson's versatility was something that led to some big offers down the stretch. Programs like Butler, Xavier, and Ohio State all came in late and the Buckeyes are hoping to use Wesson in a variety of roles.

"They see me fitting in real well," he said. "With all of the transfers and everything they said I have a real good chance of making my own way there and that feels good. They want me to play the 2, 3, and the 4."

Wesson is Ohio State's fourth member of the 2016 recruiting class and is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com.
