Wesson is a coach's dream

Ohio State added some toughness and versatility to its 2016 basketball class on Wednesday with the pledge of local star Andre Wesson. The 6-foot-6 wing from nearby Westerville South High School was instrumental in the Wildcats' state championship run this spring.

We caught up with South head coach Ed Calo who has nearly 30 years of head coaching experience. Several of Calo's players have went on to the Division I level over the years, but few brought as much to his team as Wesson.

"They're getting a complete player," said Calo of what the Buckeyes can expect. "A kid that plays both ends of the floor, a willing defender. He can guard multiple positions, he shoots it really well and he runs the floor really well. He rebounds, he does a lot of things exceptionally well."

Generally considered one of the most improved prospects in the Midwest, it was one thing for evaluators to see Wesson every few months and notice the changes. But for Calo to be around Wesson each day for four years, he is able to offer a unique perspective.

"Over four years it was incredible," he said. "I knew he was going to be a good player, but I didn't know he was going to be as good as he is now. I knew he was going to be a good player because of two things; one he's a tough kid and two he loves the game. He spends a lot of time working on his game, he loves the gym. His improvement every year was just amazing, he just grew so much and he's a very coachable young man."

That ability to accept coaching made life easy for Calo the last few years as the Wildcats have appeared in the last two Division I state title games.

"He was a breeze to coach, really," Calo explained. "He was one of the great kids to coach because he absorbs everything. I can tell him something one time, and trust me this is very unusual, and three or four games later you could see him thinking, 'now this is what I have to do in this situation'. I've learned that you can't do that as a coach, you have to constantly reinforce, but he just absorbs everything. He's just a great player to coach."

Wesson is being brought to Ohio State to play on the wing and possibly see some time as a stretch four. He is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com.
