One of the great pleasant recruiting surprises, not only in this class, but in recent memory for Ohio State was five-star offensive lineman Wyatt Davis. The 6-foot-3, 328-pound prospect out of powerhouse St. John Bosco in Bellflower (Ca.) quickly emerged on the Ohio State radar late in the spring and scheduled a June unofficial visit to Columbus.

Just six days later, Davis was a Buckeye, a shocking turn of events at the time. Davis had admired Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer from afar as a young kid, but meeting him in person helped turn the tide for the Buckeyes.

“It was pretty surprising because right when we first got there and saw the facilities and stuff he called us in immediately,” Davis told Rivals'com's Adam Gorney after his June Ohio State visit. “I talked to him on the phone a couple times but really meeting someone you see on TV for all those years, he’s such a historic coach, just to sit down with him and hear him talk, I’m not going to say I was star-struck but it was on that level.”

Ohio State was able to hold on to Davis over the past seven months despite some late rumors involving programs such as USC and Oregon. Davis maintained throughout, however, that there was nothing to the late rumors.

"There's nothing there," Davis told BuckeyeGrove.com at the Army Bowl in January. "There's nothing with USC. I'm fully committed and I don't have any visits coming up. I'll sign with Ohio State in February."

Davis held firm to his word, signing his letter of intent on Wednesday morning. So the Buckeyes will welcome the nation's top rated offensive guard to campus in June where he will be expected to compete for what should be a vacant right guard position (assuming Billy Price moves to center).

"They told me to be ready to compete when I get up there," Davis said. "They are looking for me more at right guard, to compete for the guard spot. They told me to be ready to compete."

Davis finished the recruiting cycle as the nation's top guard, No. 3 overall prospect in California and the No. 22 prospect in the entire nation.
