It's official: Ohio State has signed four-star offensive lineman Luke Wypler of St. Joseph Regional in Montvale, New Jersey
It was a battle between Stanford and Ohio State, with more twists and drama than most people know, but in the end the Buckeyes prevailed for four-star 2020 offensive lineman Luke Wypler of St. Joseph Regional in Montvale, New Jersey.
The decision to pick the Bucks over the Cardinal happened back in July of 2018, and despite a brief hesitation when Urban Meyer announced his retirement, Wypler has remained rock solid in his pledge to the Scarlet and Gray, and is now officially a Buckeye after signing his letter of intent today.
Wypler will enroll early, and get started on his college career in just a few months. Ohio State fans should be excited about what they're going to get from one of the top linemen in America.
"I’m looking forward to being able to work with all the great people within the program that are going to make me a better student and player," Wypler told BuckeyeGrove. "And hopefully win some gold pants, Big Ten championships and national championships. In doing my part to achieve that, I'm going to bring an attitude that you bring your hard hat, tools, and lunch pail and go to work everyday, which fits what Coach Day has built there."
Wypler signs with OSU currently ranked as a 4-star, No. 213 overall, the No. 3 center, and the No. 6 prospect in New Jersey for 2020, per Rivals.
Gleitman's Thoughts
Wypler starred at offensive tackle for SJR during his high school career, but at 6-foot-4, 280-pounds, it appears he is destined for the interior at the college level, with the Buckeyes talking center, and the possibility to play guard as well.
That said, Wypler has some of the best feet I have ever seen on an offensive lineman, which allowed him to be so successful on the outside in high school, and what will allow him to play multiple positions, even possibly right tackle, if needed, once he gets to college.
When you talk about the ideal offensive lineman, the words toughness, grit, power, strength, leverage, and smash mouth come to mind. Wypler embodies all of those things. He's a blue collar type of worker, who is willing to sacrifice it all, and give everything he has, for the success of the team. That's exactly the type of guy you want to go to war with in the trenches.
Additionally, he's extremely intelligent. He understand schemes, technique, line calls, shifts, slides, coverages, blitz looks, and more. That will help him tremendously at the next level, especially if he ends up at center, and will be the guy calling the offense on the field for the Buckeyes.
Wypler may end up redshirting next season with what Ohio State has coming back on the offensive line, but it would be surprising if he wasn't a multi-year starter and eventual NFL talent by the time he is done in Columbus.
