Departing safety Damon Webb made news when he spurned in-state schools like Michigan and Michigan State to sign with Ohio State as part of the 2014 class. Time has flown for Webb as his Ohio State career has come to an end and it ended with Webb playing some of the best football of his career.
The No. 40 player in the nation for the class of 2014, Webb was recruited as a cornerback but would eventually move to safety in 2016.
Webb was a member of the Rivals100 and rated as a four-star by Rivals.com coming out of Cass Tech high school in Detroit. With offers from Michigan and Michigan State, many felt that it would be hard to pull Webb out of state. Webb said after committing that the Wolverines were not his leader and he viewed all of his offers equally and just made the decision for the Buckeyes because of the older players and atmosphere.
Webb was the first Cass Tech player to sign with Ohio State since 2004 when Vernon Gholston joined the Buckeyes.
There was no redshirt time for Webb as he immediately got involved for the Buckeyes in nine games during Ohio State's 2014 national championship run. The Illinois game was Webb's biggest game in terms of output with three tackles and a forced fumble.
Webb saw more action in 2015 where he spent part of the season as the nickel back for the Buckeyes. Webb would only take part in seven games, down from nine the season before, but would see his tackles total increase to 10.
The move to safety in 2016 would be Webb's path to the field where he started opposite of Malik Hooker at safety and would never look back in terms of seeing action for the Buckeyes. Webb would record 57 tackles on the season and would also have his first interception of his collegiate career, against Nebraska, and would return it for his first touchdown at Ohio State.
Webb led the Buckeyes in interceptions in 2017 and recorded his second touchdown as a Buckeye against USC in the Cotton Bowl. He would go on to be named defensive MVP for the Cotton Bowl with that pick six and a fumble recovery. Webb also finished 3rd on the team with 61 tackles through 14 games and recovered two fumbles for the Buckeyes.
WalterfFootball.com has Webb rated as the No. 9 safety in the upcoming NFL Draft and projects him to be selected anywhere from the 3rd to the 5th round.
