Urban Meyer has been back with the program for a couple of weeks now but this will be his first week where he can coach the team on Saturday. But will we see a different role out of Meyer this week than in years past? The answer is yes, according to Meyer.Â
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Urban Meyer took part in his first Big Ten weekly teleconference on Tuesday and to the surprise of many, the topics were entirely around football and not around the three-game suspension that kept him off the sidelines for nearly the first month of the season.
In Meyer's absence, Ryan Day led the team to a perfect 3-0 record and while nobody is saying that the team play perfectly, it would have been very easy for the distractions from off the field to creep into the WHAC and cost the Buckeyes a game, most notably last week's game in Arlington (Texas) against TCU, a game that Ohio State won 40-28.
Now the Buckeyes have to figure out how they are going to reintegrate the entire coaching staff with Meyer returning to the sideline for the game against Tulane. Day said all along that this was Meyer's team and he was just there to keep things moving forward, mission accomplished. It seems that Meyer was impressed enough that he is going to take on a bit of a different role than most would expect with Day and Kevin Wilson doing such a good job with the offense.
"I think Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson and have done such a great job that I am going to be more of the game manager," Meyer said. "Obviously, I will be involved and more of the game manager at this point."
Meyer added that Day would remain on the sidelines for the game instead of being up in the booth. That will mean that Wilson will be the eye-in-the-sky but Day will continue to be in the middle of the action and there to work with his young quarterbacks.
People think of Meyer as being a head coach who is involved in every aspect and this turn to more of a 'game manager' may take many by surprise but Meyer admits it was something that he had already been thinking of as a result of the staff that he has in place.
"Going into the season was what I was hoping for. Obviously, the results were very positive," Meyer said.
It would not be the first time that Meyer has done this, according to Meyer.
"I have done that before in the past," Meyer added. "I help where I need to help. I think a high degree of it was the performance of the offense and how well they have worked together and obviously with the success we have had."
Many people feel that Day may have his own program by this point next year and he was someone that Meyer had targeted for a long time to have on his staff. Day signed a three-year deal with the Buckeyes and became one of the first million-dollar assistants in Ohio State football coaching history. While Day has given no indication of looking around, it may be hard to keep him and Meyer identified a long time ago that Day was a star in the making.
"He is elite," Meyer said. "He is an elite coach and I knew that when I hired him. A guy that I wanted to get on my staff for quite some time now. He is just very organized, very strong, and he has a good staff behind him. He just does a very good job."
Clearing up some personnel issues
The Buckeyes got out of Texas with a big win but also suffered an injury that could change the complexion of the defense, at least for some time.
Nick Bosa went down in the game and did not return to the field after some sort of abdominal/groin injury left him on the field of AT&T Stadium for several minutes. Bosa re-emerged late in the game in street clothes and the speculation began that this could be more than a week or two kind of issues.
"He is one of the best players that I have ever been around and a better person. Just an elite player," Meyer said.
Now it will be on guys like Chase Young and Jonathon Cooper to step up and be that force while younger players like Tyreke Smith and Tyler Friday have to look at being the next man up.
When might the Buckeyes know more about Bosa's status?
"We will know mid-week here," Meyer added. "Further tests are being done now."
Don't look for the Buckeyes to run to the media to announce his status with Penn State waiting in the wings. It would not benefit the Buckeyes to broadcast injuries if they can avoid that, but the thought is this could be more than just a 'couple of weeks' type of thing, but nobody will know for sure until the tests are completed and evaluated.
The Buckeyes have been pretty healthy through the early part of the season but could be facing another lineman being somewhat-limited, at least for this week.
"BB Landers is probable for this week," Meyer said. "I think that is it."
Ohio State will more than likely not need him for Tulane, a team that is a five-touchdown underdog.
The Buckeyes will be getting one player back that was held out but not for injury last week with the return of Brian Snead to practice. He has been in a battle with Master Teague as the No. 3 running back behind JK Dobbins and Mike Weber.
"He will be back practicing today," Meyer said of Snead not being part of the travel squad to Texas. "It was just for a disciplinary reason that we did not take him on the trip."
