Mathis accounts for three touchdowns in opener

DETROIT -- A few states started their high school football seasons last week, but for most, this was the opening weekend of the season. Oak Park (MI) and Ohio State quarterback commit Dwan Mathis kicked things off on a winning note, defeating Utica Eisenhower 31-13 as part of the Xenith Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University in Detroit.

Mathis rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another in the season-opening win. A fast start, with touchdowns on the first two drives, helped propel Oak Park to the win.

"It was very important to get off to a good start," Mathis explained. "We've been waiting (for the season opener) for a long time and it felt great to be back out here getting a big win for our program."

Mathis, a key piece to Ohio State's 2019 recruiting efforts, commented on the recent suspension of head coach Urban Meyer when prompted by a group of reporters after the game.

"I'm not bothered at all by the situation," he stated. "Everything is good with Ohio State."

A big part of the reason that Mathis flipped his pledge in June from Michigan State to Ohio State was his relationship with co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day. Day has been the interim head coach during Meyer's absence and will coach the team for the first three games of the season.

Mathis and his parents have been in constant communication with Day throughout the whole ordeal.

"I've been talking to coach Day a lot, I just talked to him a couple of days ago," Mathis explained. "He's just telling me that this is a test and that they're going to ace it."

Mathis also continues to recruit class of 2020 teammates Justin Rogers and Enzo Jennings. Both hold early offers from the Buckeyes.
