Last year the Buckeyes started a true freshman on the offensive line out of necessity. Could the Buckeyes buck the trend and start another true freshman at right guard?
COLUMBUS, Ohio – When anyone talks to head coach Urban Meyer about the identity of his Ohio State football teams he will be quick to point out that he sees his teams as 'line driven' and that the play of both lines is critically important to the success of the other seven units of the team.
The defensive line is being touted as one of the strengths of the team in 2017 with defensive end depth that goes on for days. But what about the guys who line up across from them in practice on the offensive line?
The 2017 line will have a pair of senior starters and at least one junior (Isaiah Prince) lining up against Indiana. What does that leave for the future? Or in terms of depth?
Ohio State brought in arguably its best offensive line recruiting class of the Meyer-era in the class of 2017 with players like Wyatt Davis, Josh Myers and Thayer Munford. All highly regarded in their own right.
The move from being a high school all-state performer to the college game is a dramatic one. Michael Jordan bucked the trend in 2016 and started as a true freshman for the Buckeyes but that truly is the exception and not the rule at a place like Ohio State. But through summer conditioning and a little more than a week of fall camp, reports have been strong with the trio of 2017 linemen going through their first run-up to a college football season.
"Those are three guys we're excited about when Josh Myers and Thayer Munford and Wyatt Davis, those are all want-to, try-hard guys, so we have no problem playing a guy," Meyer said.
