Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller tight end Jake Hausmann committed to Ohio State more than a year ago but made things official on Wednesday morning by signing his letter of intent with the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-4, 228-pound prospect made major waves last January when he committed to Ohio State at a big Junior Day gathering.

At the time, the battle between Ohio State and Notre Dame for Hausmann was fierce. Hausmann made several visits to South Bend and with the Greater Catholic League's history of sending a lot of its top prospects to Notre Dame, there was plenty of anxiety among the Ohio State fan base at the time.

But Hausmann instead went with the in-state program, following the lead of former teammate Sam Hubbard.

"Ultimately it was the people," Hausmann told BuckeyeGrove.com at the time. "Everyone on that team has welcomed me from day one and I can't wait to be a part of it."

Hausmann will arrive at Ohio State in the summer and he hopes to hit the ground running. The departure of Nick Vannett to the NFL leaves an opening at the tight end spot. While it's expected that redshirt junior Marcus Baugh will fill the starting position, the Buckeyes often times line up in two tight end sets, which means someone else is going to need to step up.

"There's definitely an opportunity there," Hausmann said. "There's basically an open spot right now and I think it's going to be a battle between a couple of us. You just have to be engaged, listen to the coaches, make sure you're doing everything right."

There certainly is an opportunity for Hausmann. He comes from a premier high school program that plays a national schedule and is run almost like a college program. The learning curve is always steep, but it will be less so for Hausmann given all of the experience he has acquired at the high school level.

His willingness to block could certainly net him some early time and he'll need to quickly get all of the schemes down because the main role of the second tight end is to help block in the running game. If he proves himself to be as capable in that regard as he was in high school, then he is definitely a candidate to burn the redshirt.
