Epic haul for the Buckeyes is 'just the beginning'

Martell says this Ohio State recruiting class is just getting started.

Recruiting has never been better at Ohio State than it has been under the guidance of head coach Urban Meyer. The 2017 class, however, has taken things up another notch. The class rankings have the Buckeyes in the No. 2 spot for now as they continue to play leapfrog with Alabama for that top spot. With five fewer commitments than the Crimson Tide, it could only be a matter of time before Ohio State is back on top.

The summer months have been especially kind to the Buckeyes so far, landing top 100 prospects Tate Martell, Chase Young, and Wyatt Davis, along with in-state star Amir Riep.

Since joining the class, Martell has been among the most active recruiters the Buckeyes have. His two top receiver targets are set to announce on August 22nd and 24th respectively when Tyjon Lindsey and Trevon Grimes are slated to come off the board.

"This is just the beginning," said Martell after Friday Night Lights. "You're going to see a lot more coming in this class. That's all I can say right now, but it's going to be a legit class."

Martell keeps a white board of priority targets at his house, guys he knows that Ohio State is in the picture for and that he can hopefully make a difference in their decision making process.

"It's just guys that I've been trying to go after," he said. "I know they are guys that we have a shot at and I know that if I stay consistent with those guys and build a good relationship with them, there's a better chance that we could get them."

Both quarterbacks, Martell and Danny Clark, have taken active leadership roles on the recruiting front. It's just the nature of the position.

"You want to establish that leadership role before (arriving on campus)," he continued. "That way the guys that are already here can see what you're all about."

Martell was recently able to throw in his future home for the first time, taking part in Friday Night Lights.

"It was fun," said Martell. "You get to be around all of the guys that you're recruiting and all of the guys on the team. Being around your future teammates and guys you're recruiting, being able to talk to them face-to-face, it's good."
