2019 legacy prospect dominates in season opener

Carter Jr. turned in a big performance on Saturday night.

CINCINNATI - For years, the Crosstown Showdown in Cincinnati (Ohio) has provided a platform for underclassmen to jump onto the radar. Class of 2019 Pickerington (Ohio) Central defensive lineman DeWayne Carter Jr. did just that on Saturday night. The 6-foot-3, 270-pound prospect was a disruptive force on the interior defensive line all game, putting an exclamation point on his performance with a game-ending sack as the clock expired.

"I saw the guard left me open on one side so I just stepped to the inside, the quarterback stepped up, and I was able to make the play," Carter said.

As Carter continues to compile impressive film, schools will begin to take notice of his abilities. One SEC program already has.

"I didn't go to any (college) camps but I have talked to Kentucky before," he said. "I know a lot of our kids (visit) there and say it's a good program."

When college football Saturdays roll around, however, Carter enjoys watching the local school.

"I like to watch Joey Bosa and Adolphus Washington, I like the Buckeyes," he said.

Growing up in Central Ohio and being the son of former Ohio State receiver DeWayne Carter Sr., it is not a surprise that Carter likes the Buckeyes. But Carter has done his own research on Ohio State.

"This summer we had to do a summer reading assignment," he explained. "I read a book by Urban Meyer called Above the Line. I just like their drive and their rules, like four-to-six and A-to-B every singe play, just about giving maximum effort. I love to give maximum effort on every play."

Carter is just one of many Division I prospects on this year's Pickerington Central roster.
