COLUMBUS- With the amount of depth in the Ohio State running back room, it can be hard to distribute carries and playing time to deserving players. With that, Demario McCall took that issue in his own hands, making himself a utility player for the offense and special teams.
To his teammates, including Antonio Williams who coined the term, McCall is known as the “scat back.” Defined as a shifty player that can do multiple things to make plays, McCall has done everything from lining up behind quarterback J.T. Barrett as the primary tailback to going out wide as a receiver.
This use of McCall was nothing new to him. On a much smaller scale in 2016, he rushed for 270 yards, had 84 receiving yards and recorded four touchdowns.
Moving back and forth from the receiver room to the running back room, McCall likes the variety of ways in which the offensive staff uses him on the football field.
“I actually like the position I am in right now,” McCall said. “I am still helping out the tailbacks, but I am in the receiver room, so I am in a great position right now. Now that I am there, I have a lot of opportunities to get on the field.”
