COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two days after the Ohio State defense halted a well-regarded Bowling Green offense, it was back to work as they prepare to face the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, which draws comparisons to premiere offenses like Baylor.
The Golden Hurricane is coming of a drubbing of its own, hanging 45 points and 507 yards on San Jose State for a 45-10 victory, its largest margin of victory in over a year.
Leading the charge for the Golden Hurricane is senior Dane Evans, who threw for 198 yards and caught the eye of defensive line coach Larry Johnson.
“He’s got a quick arm,” Johnson said. “He’s a great decision-maker, he can see the field, gets the ball out extremely quick, so we’ve got to adjust our pass rush again.”
With uncertainty surrounding the defensive line after Tracy Sprinkle’s season ending injury, attention will shift to the secondary and its newest playmaker, Malik Hooker.
“(Tulsa) likes throwing the ball around and everything, so we’re just going to get in the lab, take a look and hopefully make a lot of plays like we did last week,” Hooker said.
After getting his feet wet against a fast-paced team, Hooker believes this week represents the opportunity to better prepare not having to worry about the experience of playing college football for the first time.
“Every week you’ve got to look at is you’ve got to do a lot better than what you did the week before,” Hooker said.
Hooker and the rest of the defense will prepare as a unit that has already inserted itself in the “best in the country” conversation having allowed just three points and 238 yards to an offense that ranked sixth in the nation in 2015.
“We played really well last week, but I feel like we haven’t reached our potential,” Hooker said. “We’ve got to try to out-prepare ourselves, more than we did last week.”
