Coombs knows to play guys early
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Over the past couple of seasons there has not been a position group in more demand than Ohio State's secondary and it appears that the NFL will take notice this year with three Buckeye defensive backs expected to be taken in the first half of the first round of the April draft.
Losing three top defensive backs to the NFL would be a catastrophe for most programs but it is becoming common place for the Buckeyes, who saw the same thing happen just a year before (Eli Apple, Vonn Bell, Tyvis Powell).
Lessons has been learned from this by cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs and the rest of the Ohio State coaches. You better play the guys while you have them. And if that means rotating three corners, then do it.
"Play guys, that is the honest truth," Coombs said after practice on Thursday. "I think last year, at this time, people did not believe that we would do it. I believed it would work but it did not have evidence, it was theory versus testimony and now it is testimony. So, what I learned last year is to play guys."
