COLUMBUS, Ohio –– The Ohio State men's basketball team announced a schedule update Thursday, as the Buckeyes are set to take on an in-state opponent they have not faced in well over a decade.
Ohio State travels to Xavier on Nov. 18 as part of the 2021 Gavitt Games, an event that honors Big East founder Dave Gavitt.
The Buckeyes are 3-0 in Gavitt Games competition dating back to 2016, but have not played Xavier since 2007's 78-71 overtime win in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Ohio State went on to lose to Florida in the tournament's championship game.
“What the Gavitt Games have done at the start of the college basketball season, and honoring the late great Dave Gavitt, has been tremendous for our game,” Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said a university release. “It has provided a number of really great matchups and this year is no exception. Xavier is a tremendous program with a rich history and passionate fan base. Playing against a good, well-coached team in that environment early in the season will be great for our 2021-22 team.”
Xavier finished 13-8 last season, head coach Travis Steele's third with the team, but ended with a losing record in conference play at 6-7.
The Musketeers charted as high as No. 22 in the AP Top 25 Poll, but ultimately finished the year unranked and out of the NCAA Tournament.
More information about the matchup, and the Buckeyes' past participation in the event, from the program release:
"Ohio State won each of the first two meetings, which were both played at Xavier, during the 1932-33 and 1934-35 seasons. Xavier won the postseason NIT meeting in 1984 and then the Buckeyes claimed a memorable 78-71 overtime win in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament in Lexington, Ky. Ron Lewis’ three-pointer late in regulation tied the game and ultimately was the catalyst for the Buckeyes’ Final Four run and its appearance in the national championship game.
This is the fourth time Ohio State has played in the event and the sixth year overall for the games between the Big Ten and Big East. Last year, the conferences announced a mutually agreed upon decision to cancel the 2020 edition due to scheduling adjustments and timing issues presented by the delayed start to the college basketball season."
