Buckeyes offer Ohio linebacker

Over the past two seasons, Cleveland (Ohio) St. Ignatius product Tommy Eichenberg has been among the most productive linebackers in the state of Ohio. The four-star prospect gave Boston College his commitment back in June but on Wednesday evening a potentially game-changing offer came through with Ohio State throwing its hat into the ring.

The Buckeyes have been watching Eichenberg closely over the past two seasons but have not been looking at taking many linebackers in the 2019 class. This summer's decommitment of Kane Patterson, who recently verballed to Clemson, has opened up a spot at linebacker and Eichenberg will now be pursued for that spot by the Buckeyes.

Givler's Take

This is a long time coming, in my opinion. Eichenberg is a tremendous linebacker prospect who has excelled playing on the outside at St. Ignatius but has the frame, toughness, and instincts to move inside to the MIKE linebacker position at the college level. Ohio State could certainly use more quality inside linebacker depth on the roster and this offer makes perfect sense.

Eichenberg is not only position-versatile, but he does a lot of things very well. He's an underrated athlete who can play in space and cover tight ends, but he is also an excellent blitzer both from the edge and on the interior. But Eichenberg's instincts against the run are also tremendous. He does an excellent job of shedding blocks and reading the play in front of him.

Eichenberg, in my opinion, is one of the top two linebacker prospects in Ohio along with Lexington's Cade Stover and I don't feel like the gap between the two is that big.
