Buckeyes emerge as new contender for Brennan Eagles

After bursting onto the scene with a stellar spring and summer camp tour, Brennan Eagles showed in a win against Katy-Seven Lakes on Saturday night that he is as good as advertised.

Eagles caught two nearly-identical fades in the corner of the end zone as part of a six-catch performance to lead his team to a 44-3 win.

Eagles’ recruitment really picked in June as he started collecting offers in bunches, but now teams targeting him have been turning up the heat a little bit more. After four games, Eagles has more than 375 yards receiving and four touchdowns.

“Things have been good, the recruiting process has been getting better,” he said. “I’ve been building a relationship with Ohio State, and with our win tonight, things have been going well.”

Eagles said that the Buckeyes, along with Texas and USC have been the most active communicators with him. He also said that Alabama, Arkansas and Michigan State have been starting to show him some more attention as well.

IN HIS WORDS

On Ohio State

“A recruiting analyst or someone in player personnel got a hold of me on twitter, he got me on the phone with the wide receivers coach, Coach (Zach) Smith,” he said. “Since then, we’ve been building a good relationship.”

“They play 10 receivers,” he said. “They run a fast offense - everything’s speed - you know, speed kills, and that’s where I want to be; in a place that really runs that speed.”

On Texas

“They haven’t said too much, but they invited me back to another game,” he said. “I had Saturday games last week and this week, but of course I’m trying to get to a lot of games here this season.”

“At Texas I have the best relationship with Coach (Jeff) Traylor,” he said. “He is down for it. He gets to the point, tells the truth - he’s an honest person.”

On USC

“I want to take a visit out there too,” he said. “Just to see how the campus is, the atmosphere, see how it would feel just to be out there. I’ve never been to California before, only place I’ve been in is Louisiana, Texas and Atlanta.”

“They were in on me when I didn’t have a lot of film out, that was all camp-based,” he said. “So that really opened up my eyes to see how they look at me.”

RIVALS REACTION

Eagles has proven to be a measured personality and is very thoughtful when considering his options somewhat still early-on in the process. Now that more teams have showed a more earnest interest in him, he’s doing his due diligence to learn as much as he can about his options.

“I record all the games,” he said. “I’m watching my position, the defensive backs in the conference, I’m watching all of that.”

Make no mistake, on the field he plays with the sort of bravado that many game breaking-caliber receivers do, but he’s shown improved consistency catching the ball with every game and event he’s shown participated in over the last six months. Eagles has all the potential to be one of the top overall players in 2018 and is only getting better.
