BOISE, Idaho - Ohio State's NCAA Tournament is almost here as the team has made its way to its first and (hopefully) second round games as part of the West Regional. 68 teams have had their names called already as part of the 'dance card' and two teams have already been sent packing as play-in action takes place back in the Buckeye state in Dayton.
The Buckeyes don't have to worry about that, they are a No. 5 seed and have quite a challenge on their hands with South Dakota State, a team that won both its regular season title but conference tournament title as well as part of the Summit League.
Many fans of the Buckeyes have not had a chance to see SDSU play, maybe outside of its conference championship win over South Dakota. What do we really know about the Jackrabbits and is this one of those 5-12 games in the NCAA Tournament that everyone is picking the underdog? 12 seeds have beaten 5 seeds at better than a 35-percent clip and last year Middle Tennessee State beat Minnesota. In both 2014 and 2013, three of the four 12 seeds won their games over 5 seeds.
While we are not asking Matt Zimmer of the Argus Leader for his prediction on Thursday's game, we are asking about South Dakota State, a team that he is very familiar with as we go Behind Enemy Lines and learn more about Ohio State's opponent.
BuckeyeGrove: Just how good is Mike Daum? I have heard comparisons to Wally Szczerbiak or even a young Dirk Nowitzki. Are those fair comparisons or is he different? What makes him so potent?
Matt Zimmer: He's as good as you'll see in mid-major basketball. He's 6-9 but has a wingspan that allows him to play more like a 7-footer.
When he first started playing as a freshman he was pretty much a pure shooter but he's developed his inside game and become a pretty good rebounder in the years since.Still, he's on the floor to score. He has pretty much unlimited range and while he has kind of a slow release he can make shots with guys right in his face pretty easily.
I don't think he's going to be an NBA All-Star, but the Dirk Nowitzi comparison is fair just from the standpoint of Daum brings a very similar skill set to SDSU that Dirk does to his team, just on a smaller scale.
