Pryor goes No. 1 in Spring Game draft

COLUMBUS - Senior defensive tackle Todd Denlinger won the coin toss for the Gray team and they used the No. 1 overall pick in this year's spring game draft to select quarterback Terrelle Pryor Wednesday. The Scarlet team took quarterback Joe Bauserman with their first pick.

"Once we asked coach (Jim) Tressel how many quarters it was going to be live, you gotta go with Terrelle," senior safety Kurt Coleman said. "He can make so many plays with his feet and with his arm that it was honestly a no-brainer once we figured that out."

According to Tressel, Pryor and Bauserman will both wear black "no contact" jersey's for the first quarter. Pryor will be live in a red jersey in the second and fourth quarters, and Bauserman in the third and fourth quarters. Walk-on Justin Siems will play quarterback for the Gray team in the send quarter and the Scarlet team in the third quarter.

Prior to the draft, Tressel assigned wide receivers coach Darrell Hazell to coach the Scarlet team and linebackers coach Luke Fickell to coach the Gray squad. He appointed seniors Jim Cordle, Doug Worthington, Lawrence Wilson, Anderson Russell, Jon Thoma, Andre Amos, Joe Gantz and Ryan Schuck to play for Hazell's Scarlet team, while the Gray team was given Coleman, Denlinger, Ray Small, Jake Ballard, Marcus Williams, Aaron Pettrey, Tom Ingham and Andrew Moses before the draft.

The one biggest question mark for the Gray team now that they have Pryor may be their ability to protect him.

With Cordle already appointed to the Scarlet team, they used their first three picks at offensive line to draft Bryant Browning, Andy Miller and Mike Adams, all of whom are battling for the starting offensive tackle positions this spring.

"We came out and we got Bryant because he can play tackle and guard...then somehow we got Andy Miller and Mike Adams," Cordle said. "Right now we'll have Adams at tackle, Connor Smith at left guard, myself at center, Bryant at right guard and then Andy or Mike at right tackle."

While the Gray team landed Justin Boren and Michael Brewster - arguably the team's top two linemen this spring - to play inside, they could be hurting at the tackle position where they ended up with true freshman Jack Mewhort and junior Josh Kerr.

"They might have Terrelle Pryor, but right now they have Jack Mewhort (at left tackle), a brand new freshman, and we have Thad Gibson," Cordle said. "Not a good matchup."

The Gray team did end up with both Jake Ballard and Jake Stoneburner, which they tried to use as a bargaining chip to land another tackle but the Scarlet team stood pat, which could mean a lot of two-tight end sets for the Gray team Saturday.

"We have two great tight ends, so if we need to we can go silver," Coleman said. "And I don't think they're going to be able to get around our edge."

If they do, Coleman pointed out that Gibson missed two sacks against Pryor in the jersey scrimmage when he was live with the red jersey.
