McLaurin is a Buckeye

Follow Noon | Givler | Axelrod

The commitments are starting to roll in for the Ohio State football program. On Sunday, the Buckeyes landed their third verbal commitment in four days from Indianapolis (Ind.) Cathedral wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The 6-foot, 175-pound prospect chose Ohio State among a group of three finalists that also included Missouri and Purdue.

"I've officially committed to THE Ohio State University," McLaurin posted on his twitter page. "I'm ready to be a Buckeye."

McLaurin had just recently landed his Ohio State offer on Friday, after camping with the Buckeyes for the second time in 12 days. McLaurin was also able to learn a lot about Ohio State during his recent trips to Columbus and not just solely about the football program.

"First and foremost, it's the academics and things like that," he explained. "It's a chance to get a degree in something that I love and while I'm doing that, a chance to further myself in football."

The Ohio State coaches evaluated McLaurin closely on June 9th, pulling him aside for an individual workout where he was put through the ringer all morning going through drills and catching passes. While the performance was certainly impressive, the coaches gave McLaurin some things to work on and asked him to return 12 days later.

McLaurin accepted that challenge, coming back and in just two short weeks showing improved route running and ball skills. While many prospects would have balked at the request to come back such a short time later, McLaurin took the challenge and the way he was pushed by the Ohio State coaches at those two camps ultimately weighed heavily into his decision.

"Also, the opportunity to play for a coaching staff that challenges me each and every day," McLaurin continued. "They're not going to (allow for) complacency and they're always going to help me get better and things like that. Also, a team that is going to compete for championships and help me reach my potential both as a person and as a player. I'm also going to be around a group of guys that have the same core values as me and will be working towards a common goal. I don't require much but that was basically what I was looking for."

McLaurin is one of the fastest players in the country in the 2014 class, recording a 4.43 electronic-timed 40-yard dash at the Massillon (Ohio) Nike Combine back in February, the fastest time of the day among over 1,400 participants. McLaurin followed that up with a 4.48 time at the Chicago Nike Combine.
