Richmond is a special prospect and person

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - As one of the top programs in the state of Tennessee, Memphis University School has produced numerous Division I college football prospects over the years but the school may currently have its best prospect to date in class of 2015 offensive tackle Drew Richmond. The 6-foot-6, 295-pound prospect already has an offer list that is in the double digits with schools such as Alabama, Florida, and Ohio State throwing their hats into the ring early on.

For University School co-defensive coordinator Glenn Rogers, his nine years of playing experience in the NFL and CFL, as well as his tenure at MUS have given him quite a perspective on the game of football and he knows that Richmond is a special talent.

"I've been here 13 years under coach Bobby Alston, our head coach," explained Rogers. "I've seen a lot of talent come through here, with four state titles to back it up. Barry Brunetti is probably the best player we've had here but Drew is probably the best lineman we've had since I've been here."

"He's big, he's about 6-foot-6 and 300-plus pounds and he can really bend his knees," Rogers continued. "He's also very aggressive. There have been so many schools coming in and talking about him and looking at him."

During the spring evaluation period, college coaches have been flocking to MUS to get more information on the athletic tackle prospect. Interest and offers are coming in from all across the nation.

"He's got 13 offers right now with more to come," Rogers said. "Cal and Oregon just came through this week and they haven't even offered yet but they were here and they were very, very impressed."

Richmond has grown up in SEC country but the early offer from Ohio State is something that has definitely caught his attention. Richmond's fondness for the Buckeyes came long before the offer, however.

"He came here as an eighth grader and we asked him if he had a choice of colleges, where would he want to go to school and he immediately said Ohio State, right off the bat," Rogers recalled. "He's always had interest in Ohio State, he loves the program. At the time coach (Jim) Tressel was the coach but now they have coach Meyer who was at Florida and has those national championship rings. We all know about Orlando Pace and all of those linemen from Ohio State throughout the years and all of those draft picks, the Cris Carter's of the world, so it has a great football pedigree. Academically, it's probably one of the best schools in the country."

While Richmond's talent level as a football prospect is undeniable, his future also appears to be very bright off the football field. The massive lineman has been a joy to be around for those that are able to interact with him on a daily basis.

"He's a jokester," Rogers said. "All of the kids and the teachers love him. He's a good kid that comes from a good family. His Dad is a manager at UPS and Mom works for the city school system on the board of education. His younger brother Drake is an honor student here and the family is just a great solid family. It's been a blessing having him here and I feel like we've been a blessing for him just making sure he's heading in the right direction academically."

Richmond plans to take part in the Rivals Five-Star Challenge June 7-9 at Soldier Field in Chicago (Ill.). Only 20 underclassmen in the entire nation are invited to this event.
