COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Maryland won't join the Big Ten for another calendar year, but the Ohio State basketball team won't have to wait that long for its next matchup with the Terrapins.

On Wednesday it was announced that Maryland will travel to Columbus to face the Buckeyes on Dec. 4, as a part of the 15th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge Presented by DICK'S Sporting Goods. This season will mark the last in which the Terrapins participate in the challenge as a part of the ACC, before they defect to the Big Ten before the start of the 2014-15 season.

"We are looking forward to having the University of Maryland on our campus this year in the Challenge," Ohio State head coach Thad Matta said. "The game will give fans of both programs a glimpse at what the series will look like when the Terrapins join the Big Ten in 2014-15."

Maryland is coming off of a 25-13 season that came to an end in the semifinals of the NIT, where the Terrapins fell to Iowa. They are expected to return three starters from last season's squad, including Dez Wells, Charles Mitchell, and Nick Faust. Head coach Mark Turgeon's incoming recruiting class includes three-star center Damonte Dodd and four-star point guard Roddy Peters

The Buckeyes, on the other hand, will return four starters from a 2012-13 team that won the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight. Matta and his staff will be forced to replace leading scorer and rebounder Deshaun Thomas, but will rely heavily on first-team All-Big Ten selection Aaron Craft and seven other returning letter-winners. Ohio State is the only program in the country to have advanced to each of the past four Sweet 16s in the NCAA Tournament.

The Buckeyes hold a 3-2 edge in their all-time series with the Terrapins, with the last matchup between the two programs coming in 1985. Ohio State has amassed a 5-6 record in the Big Ten/ACC challenge, with its most recent appearance being a 73-68 loss to Duke last November.
