CMU adds OL Shakir Carr

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan head football coach Dan Enos has announced the addition of offensive lineman Shakir Carr to the Chippewas' 2013 recruiting class.

"Shakir is a great addition to what was already a tremendous class of offensive line recruits" said Enos. "He has good, natural size and has room to grow. We are looking forward to helping him develop and are excited that he will be a part of our program."

Carr is the third recruit in the 2013 class to come to CMU from Clay High School in South Bend, Ind., joining fellow offensive lineman Alex Coty and wide receiver Wesley Thomas.

The 6-4, 280 lb. Carr was a three-year starter for the Colonials under head coach Joe Szajko. In 2012, he recorded 33 pancake blocks on offense and made 28 tackles and two fumble recoveries on defense, garnering first team-all-conference and Indiana Football Coaches' Association All-State Top 50 honors. As a junior, he received second team all-conference and all-state honorable mention recognition.

An all-around excellent athlete, Carr also earned three letters in wrestling and four in track & field, specializing in the discus and shotput. As a senior, competing as a heavyweight, Carr was a conference, sectional, and regional wrestling champion and a semi-state runner-up.

With his commitment to CMU, Carr becomes a part of stellar 2013 offensive line recruiting class that also includes Coty, Austin Doan (Romeo, Mich.), Derek Edwards (Novi, Mich.), Jack Ford (Cadillac, Mich.), and J.P. Quinn (Naperville, Ill.).

For this season, CMU returns two starters from the 2012 offensive line that allowed just 15 sacks in 13 games and paved the way for a near 1,500-yard rusher, center Nick Beamish and left guard Andy Phillips. The unit will be also bolstered by the return of tackle Jake Olson, who was lost for the season with an injury early in 2012.

ChippewaCountry Take

Carr definitely had an interesting recruitment, as he was once rumored to have committed to both CMU and then later Western Michigan.

"All of the coaches I met there are caring people," said Carr back in December during an interview with ChippewaCountry. "They care about more than football, and they just want to see me go far in life. Coach (Kirby) Cannon was real excited when I told him, and he immediately set me up for a visit on the second weekend of January."

For whatever reason, both of those situations did not work out at first, but he is an excellent late addition for the Chippewas.

It should be noted that Carr also has two teammates who committed in the class of 2013 in OL Alex Coty and WR Wesley Thomas.
