Week 1: Stars of Alabama
AlabamaVarsity.com selects the state's best performer and other performances in Week 1.
Player of the Week
Carver High School in Montgomery
The expectations are high for Carver High School this fall with the quarterback leading the Wolverines. They have talented D-I athletes on both sides of the ball led by Johnson who is also committed to Auburn. He led the way Friday night in a 49-24 win against Prattville High School.
A Mr. Football candidate completed 21-of-29 for 384 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Johnson used his speed and athleticism to add 94 yards rushing with a touchdown. Carver has another big game this Friday night against Central of Phenix City.
The next best
Bo Scarbrough, Northridge High School, running back, 2014
Scarborugh ended his junior year on a bad note with a torn ACL. He recovered from the injury and competed in camps throughout the summer. He shined in his first regular season game back from the injury with 37 carries for 214 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-30 win against Bob Jones on Friday night. He drew heavy praise after the game from Bob Jones head coach Kevin Rose who told TuscPrep.com/Tuscaloosa News, "Bo Scarbrough is the best running back in America."
ArDarius Stewart, Fultondale High School, Athlete
The Alabama commitment also started his Mr. Football campaign with a spectacular performance in his team's first game of the season with a 64-28 win against Montevallo. Stewart had 281 yards of offense with five touchdowns including two on the ground. His numbers all came in a quarter and a half of play. He is off to a hot start.
Jason Smith, McGill-Toolen High School, Quarterback
The Auburn commitment completed nine-of-13 for 193 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 124 yards on five carries in a 50-28 win against UMS-Wright.
Racean Thomas, Oxford High School, running back, 2014
'Rock' Thomas is also one of the premier backs in the state. He made AlabamaVarsity.com's pre-season first team All-State. Thomas had 16 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown in a 21-17 win at Carrollton, Ga. He also had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown which sparked the Yellow Jackets come from behind victory. He ended the night with 254 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.
Johnathan Ford, New Hope High School, running back
The Vanderbilt commitment had only 14 carries in Friday night's 45-26 win against Locust Fort, but ripped off 292 yards on the ground and four touchdowns. Ford had a night to remember and should receive a lot of extra attention this fall.
Berron Tyson, Baker High School, running back
Tyson is not the biggest player on the field (5-foot-7, 160), but he had big night with 293 yards rushing in the 34-18 win against B.C. Rain. He had three rushing touchdowns with a long of 80-yards.
