Pitt lands four-star QB Chapman
Tra'von Chapman picked the Panthers.Pitt's recruiting in the class of 2013 took a major step forward on Thursday when Kent (Oh.) Theodore Roosevelt quarterback
Chapman, a four-star prospect who ranks as the No. 11 dual-threat quarterback in the nation, picked Pitt over offers from Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Akron, Arizona, Boston College, Bowling Green, Illinois, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Kent State.
His commitment came during an unofficial visit to Pitt on Thursday, his third such visit in the last four weeks. Chapman took an unofficial visit to Pitt early in June and returned the following weekend to work out during the Panthers' prospect camp. That experience gave him an opportunity to work with Pitt quarterbacks coach Brooks Bollinger, and he came away with rave reviews.
"It was a great experience, and for him to know as much as he knows is amazing," Chapman said after the visit. "He gave me good advice and I took it and ran with it. He's a great coach."
Chapman added that his connections to the Pitt coaching staff extend beyond Bollinger, though.
"It feels pretty much like friends or family because I'm not really getting to know them anymore. I know them all pretty well and I feel pretty comfortable with all of them."
Chapman is the 11th recruit to commit to join Pitt's recruiting class of 2013. Pitt also has commitments from Glassboro (NJ) running back Corey Clement, Seton-La Salle tight end Scott Orndoff, Gateway fullback Jaymar Parrish, Chambersburg offensive lineman Aaron Reese, Wilkes-Barre GAR defensive end Shakir Soto, South Fayette receiver Zach Challingsworth, Clairton defensive back Titus Howard, LaSalle punter Ryan Winslow and Toledo (Oh.) St. John's tight end Tony Harper. Additionally, Taylor Allderdice defensive tackle Tyrique Jarrett plans to enroll at Pitt as part of the class after spending the fall at Milford Academy.
Chapman is Pitt's highest-rated recruit in this class and the biggest prospect Paul Chryst has landed as head coach of the Panthers. He also gives Pitt four-star quarterback recruits in consecutive years, following Cleveland (Tenn.) standout Chad Voytik, who arrived on campus as a true freshman this past weekend.
As a junior in 2011 Chapman threw for 2,800 yards and 29 touchdowns and rushed for 800 yards and eight touchdowns.
