Boys High Derails Lincoln
JAMAICA, NY - Boys & Girls is starting to make a habit out of this. This is the third season in a row that they have played Lincoln in the play-offs.
This is also the third season in a row that they have been able to knock off the Railsplitters.
Boys was able to dominate the third quarter, going up by as many as 19 points, and withstanding a furious comeback on their way to a 72-63 win. This is the first year that it wasn't for the city title.
It was an all-around team effort that allowed Boys to get the win. However, Wesley Myers was instrumental for the Kangaroos, scoring a game high 21 points. However, the 6-2 junior guard did much of his damage in the third quarter, scoring 10 points including 2 old fashioned three-point plays. One of Myers finishes was a pretty reverse lay-up that he spun off the backboard. He also scored on a baseline drive early in the period.
Myers has turned it up and excelled during the second half of the season. While he has been steady all season, Myers really has become one of the go to guys on the team. Leroy Fludd has been leading the team all season, but now teams can't solely focus on stopping Fludd. Myers said gained confidence from his coaches.
"I just had to come out and play how I can play, and not play hesitant" Myers said.
Fludd was no silent participant. Fludd had 20 points and 12 rebounds, but most of those points came from the charity stripe. Fludd went 7 for 8 in the final quarter when the game became a free throw contest. Lincoln was trying to extend the game and did a very good job, cutting a 19 point third quarter deficit down to 6. However, the cliché is you can't fall too far behind because it's extra hard to come back and get over the hump. Lincoln fell too far behind because even a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter barely got them within double digits.
It also didn't help that Lincoln's star sophomore guard Isaiah Whitehead (13 points) only played about 4 minutes in the first half because he picked up three fouls. Whitehead also didn't have the explosion that he usually has, but that's probably because his ankle isn't completely healed. Myers noted that Whitehead didn't have that natural "pop", but it didn't mean anything in the long run. The game still had to be played and won under any circumstance.
Myers thought his team was the better team from the beginning, but even he was surprised by how big the lead got. He thought Boys was about 10 points better. Even though the Kangaroos were in complete control, they weren't surprised that Lincoln came back and made it a game.
Boys head coach Ruth Lovelace said that Lincoln is one of the best teams in the city, so a run was expected.
"They're going to make a run. I congratulate my guys for withstanding that and being able to finish the game" Lovelace said after the game.
Now Boys gets to go to Madison Square Garden with a chance for a three-peat. They will have to face Jefferson, a team that they have lost to twice already.
Myers said he wanted to face Jefferson because he and his teammates have lost to them more than anybody else this season.
That's just who they will face for the city title. That should be a heck of a game.
