Basil is a Buckeye

The Buckeyes have picked up their second commitment in two days as Chillcothe (Ohio) kicker/punter Drew Basil gave the good news after a Thursday visit to the Ohio State campus. Basil is the 8th member of the Ohio State recruiting class and fills a pressing need on Ohio State's future special teams.

The 6-foot-2, 188-pounder picked up an Ohio State offer only recently to go along with offers from the Air Force, Cincinnati, Purdue and Kentucky. There was wide speculation that a Buckeye offer would be too much to pass up and Basil confirmed to BuckeyeGrove.com on Thursday evening that he did in fact commit to Ohio State.

Basil has received personal coaching from former Ohio State kicker Tim Williams and hopes to carry on the kicking tradition. Ohio State will lose Aaron Pettrey and Jon Thoma after the 2009 season and will only have Ben Buchanan in place to handle the double duty.

As a junior, Basil went 8-for-14 on his field goal attempts, including one that was true from a school-record 50 yards out. On extra points, he was nearly perfect, drilling 35-of-37. In addition to 23 touchbacks on his kickoffs, Basil averaged an impressive 40.2 yards a punt.

BuckeyeGrove.com will catch up with Basil on Thursday evening and have more on the newest commitment and what went into Basil's decision to join the Ohio State recruiting class.
