Pa. safety gets big offer

Canonsburg (Pa.) Canon McMillan safety Chad Hagan has maintained Ohio State as his favorite school for a long time despite not picking up an offer from the Buckeyes. While interest was always pretty evident from Ohio State, Hagan has continued to wait for the Buckeyes to pull the trigger.

On Wednesday, however, he got what he was waiting for - an offer from Ohio State. Hagan was informed by Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell on a phone call this evening.

"It is pretty big. It is really exciting," Hagan said. "It is relieving and also very exciting. You get the offers you told everyone you were going to get and it is really relieving because I have been waiting to get one from Ohio State for a long time."

Interest in the 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior defensive back has certainly been picking up recently, which is evident in his recent offers from Michigan, Wisconsin, N.C. State, and Buffalo. Hagan is also hearing from Penn State, Minnesota, Pitt, Purdue, West Virginia, and others.

Because he has such a solid relationship with Fickell, Hagan decided to call the Buckeye coach and catch up with some recent happenings in his recruitment. The phone call ended better for Hagan than he probably could have expected.

"We had after school lifting and one of my coaches is the biggest Ohio State fan I know and I asked him if I should call Coach Fickell and jab him about Michigan and Wisconsin offering me," Hagan said. "He told me to do it and I called him and I said Michigan had offered me and Coach Fickell said, 'Well, we are offering you too.'

"He said he was going to wait until tomorrow to call my coach and let me know, but he said they were offering," Hagan added.

Hagan didn't receive the official offer in writing just yet because Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel is overseas, but the defensive back was told the official scholarship offer will be sent to him in the mail next week.

"The offer is verbal but the written one will be in this coming week," Hagan said. "Because Coach Tressel went out of the country, they said they would send it to me next week."

While Ohio State has been his No. 1 for some time, the offer was something that meant quite a bit to Hagan. Though Ohio State couldn't move higher than No. 1 on his list, they may have at least created more distance for themselves.

"They are absolutely my No. 1 school right now," Hagan said. "I have been waiting for their offer for the longest time and it was just awesome to hear him say that they were going to offer me. Getting that Ohio State one was just like, 'Thank you, it is finally here.'

"Now I can stop saying they are my No.1 school and they haven't offered me because now they have."

With the offer, Hagan has planned on taking another visit to Columbus June 26 to see the facilities and meet with some of the coaches.

"Coach Fickell was talking to my head coach and he wanted us to come on up and see everything," Hagan said. "I am thinking they have a practice or something and they are going to let me watch and sit in on films. Basically to see what a regular day is like at Ohio State."

While Hagan isn't quite sure when his decision will be made, he did say he would like to do it in the late fall or beginning of winter. As of now, Hagan said he wants to concentrate on his senior season and look at all of his options.

He almost couldn't contain himself on the phone call this evening, however.

"There are times where I thought to myself as soon as Ohio State offers I am going to commit," Hagan said. "When he said I had the offer today I almost said I am coming right away, but I held off. Ohio State has been my favorite for some time, but I am going to wait before I make the decision."
