New strength coach impresses Allen

Saturday, Bret Bielema and the Wisconsin coaching staff held their final junior day with a handful of talented out-of-state prospects.

One of those players, Beau Allen, not only came away impressed with Wisconsin but also hit if off with Ben Herbert, who was recently named UW's new strength and conditioning coach.

The following is a question and answer segment conducted with Allen, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound defensive tackle from Minnetonka, Minn.

Could give us a brief recap of what happened at Wisconsin's junior day?

Allen: It went really well. It was actually my second junior day at Wisconsin because I went last year, too. Yeah, I thought it went really well. One thing that was really cool-well at junior day's you usually watch a basketball game, but yesterday we were able to watch the team do their winter work outs.

They had a competition where they split into teams. It was one player from each position on a team. They were dragging sleds, running with 45-pound weights, running sprints and shuttles. Whoever won got this huge belt. They were the winners of the winter work out sessions-it was like a WWE belt. I really thought that was an awesome motivator. It was something the new strength coach thought up.

After that we got a tour of Camp Randall. We were able to talk to the coaches and look at the locker room. At the end we had a film session and campus tour. I thought it went really well.

Did you get the chance to speak with Coach Bielema yesterday?

Allen: Yeah, I really like him a lot. We had a really good conversation. We talked about what it would be like being a Badger. Also, we talked about Coach (Charlie) Partridge and what a good coach he is. We had a good talk.

Do you have any family in the area?

Allen: Yeah, actually I have an uncle (John Westphal) who lives in the area. He played on the Badgers in 1978. He was a special teams guy and a linebacker. He lives in Janesville, which is pretty close to Madison. I brought him along yesterday and we had a really good time.

Were you able to speak with any of the other prospects in attendance?

Allen: It was the out-of-state junior day. There was a lot of great talent there; I was able to speak with Tobi Okuyemi from Wayzata (Minn.). He's a great guy even though we are high school rivals. I've seen him and a couple camps and junior days. Also, Seantrel Henderson and Lamonte Edwards were there.

Do you have a decision date set yet?

Allen: I don't have a date set but I'm pretty sure it will be after my senior season. I plan on sticking with that plan because I'd like to take my official visits.

I really liked Wisconsin. My favorite part about yesterday was speaking with the new strength coach. I thought he had a lot of good things to say. I was kind of worried about that going in because I knew they had a new strength coach. But I came out really impressed with him. You spend a majority of your time getting big in the weight room and he was impressive.
