Rudd battles Tyler in opening action at Pangos

Los Angeles, Calif. -- The Pangos All-American Camp began late Friday evening at USC's Galen Center with two hours of camp games. One of the top players in the 2010 class, 6-foot-9 Jeremy Tyler, was in action against 6-foot-7 combo forward Victor Rudd, a Rivals100 player in 2009.

Tyler is an athletic dynamo with tremendous skill upside and he was active in this contest, scoring 18 points on a variety of flashy dunks and eyebrow-raising post moves including a turnaround 12-foot bank shot off the glass that many elite college post players don't have in their arsenal.

The San Diego High School star showed why he's considered by many, including Rivals.com, to be the No. 1 recruit in the class nationally. Just a sophomore, Tyler already has a film crew following him around his high school for a documentary that intends to track him through the NBA Draft -- that would be the 2011 NBA Draft, at the earliest.

And while Tyler is clearly a better overall prospect than Rudd, the 6-foot-7 Van Nuys (Calif.) standout certainly held his own. He had 20 points in his team's close loss, but scored in transition, in the post and from beyond the 3-point line.

"I think it went pretty good," Rudd said following the game. "I wanted to guard [Tyler], he wanted to guard me. It didn't go as well as I wanted because we lost. I was a little too passive but it went OK. I think I showed I can play well even against good players like him."

Rudd also had the play of the evening, a fast break dunk from the wing where he received a pass, took two steps and elevated over a rising Tyler for the powerhouse finish. It created a stir from the several dozen fans in attendance on what was otherwise a somewhat lazy evening.

"I thought he was going to block it. I kind of brought it to the side and dunked," Rudd said.

The No. 84 recruit in the class, Rudd said he has received offers from Loyola Marymount, Oregon State, San Jose State and USC, with Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Miami, Pepperdine and Utah actively recruiting him.

Rudd and other ASU recruits will be back in action Saturday afternoon.
