Holmes picking Ohio State came as a bit of a surprise at the time with the Rivals100 defensive end selecting Ohio State over Clemson and heavily favorited Florida State. When we talked to Holmes at the Rivals Five-Star Challenge however we did start to change our tunes as it seemed that Ohio State might have a fighting chance. Buckeyes fans did get worried all over again when Mike Vrabel left the program to take a NFL coaching job but Holmes was quick to state that he was firm to Ohio State and would be part of the '14 class.

Scouting Report: "There are guys in this Ohio State class that are more college ready than Holmes but I could absolutely make the case that Jalyn has the highest ceiling of the group. At the Army Bowl in San Antonio (Texas) last month, Holmes showed tremendous flashes during the practice week and then during the game. He has the ideal build of a big-time weakside pass rusher and he has the lightning quick first step to go with it. As he gets stronger at the point of attack and works with Larry Johnson Sr. on improving his technique he could become one of the top pass rushers in the Big Ten down the road." - Givler

"Jalyn is going to need a year or so to put on the weight he needs and to add more strength so that he's able to compete at that level. He's a guy that is also very athletic and very versatile. He can play defensive end with his hand on the ground or stand up and play in space. He has big-time athleticism and it's just a matter of him being able to hold up at the point of attack, he's already a very good pass rusher." - Mid-Atlantic analyst Adam Friedman
