Hokies extend offer to athletic corner

Virginia Tech continues to extend scholarships and the latest goes to a versatile athlete as a cornerback. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder broke down the new offer and what's next.

"Virginia Tech offered me last week, I think it's been a few days," Monroe (Ga.) Monroe Area athlete Demontevious Smith said. "I had my vision of where I wanted to go and then they came in.

"Virginia Tech came out of nowhere, my coach sent the film to them and that's how they heard about me. When I talked to the coach there, they evaluated my film and he said I definitely had the model of what they were looking for. He told me that he thought I got faster and improved my speed from my junior to my senior year. He likes me at cornerback."

Prior to landing the offer from the Hokies, Smith held offers from Air Force, Navy, Harvard, Georgia Southern, Western Carolina, Buffalo, Illinois State and ULM.

So, does he know much about Tech?

"I like their winning reputation and everyone there seems to work hard," he said. "They started off the year rough, but they haven't lost since.

"I know Michael Vick played for them too and they just won the ACC Championship. I think they've been to the ACC Championship three of the last four years. I know quite a bit, hopefully I'll know more when I visit."

Speaking of a visit, Smith plans to head to Blacksburg on January 21st.

"They want me to come on the 22nd for an official," he said. "I haven't taken a visit yet, that'll be my first one."

While no other visits are set at this time, Smith claims a couple other schools are in the picture.

"I'm high on Air Force and Georgia Southern," he said. "Georgia Southern is close to home and I visited them. They upset Appalachian State and showed me they are a hard working team.

"Upon graduation at Air Force, you have your life set up. Both of them are recruiting me for quarterback."

As a junior, Smith passed for 13 touchdowns, while this season he ran for over 1,800-yards and threw for 700 along with 32 total touchdowns.

"Most coaches are telling me that I'm pretty athletic and underestimated."
