Edwards following Leong's lead

Brenham (Texas) wide receiver Derek Edwards was in College Station over the weekend to take in the game between Texas Tech and Texas A&M. Even though the result was not what he had hoped for, Edwards expects a bright future for the Red Raiders.

"The game was fun even though Tech lost. I was disappointed at the outcome, of course, but that happens," Edwards said. "They're collecting a lot of great talent right now and I think it's definitely going to pay off in years to come. It's tough right now, but I think it will get better for them really soon."

Since just before his commitment, Edwards has been building a relationship with Texas Tech wide receiver Lyle Leong. The two were able to spend some time in conversation following the game.

"We weren't allowed to talk to the coaches, but I was able to talk to Lyle a little bit." he said. "He's definitely my favorite player. I met him just before I committed. From then on I've just been following him really close and he's been having a pretty good year."

"I always get told that I look play like him, jump like him, run like him, all of that kind of stuff. I've kind of just taken it and ran with it. He's definitely a guy I look up to and I'd love to be able to play at the same high level he does someday. He sets a good example to follow for sure."

The 6-foot-1, 163-pound Texas Tech commit is still planning on putting off his official visits until after the season. He may, however, be unofficially visiting another Big 12 South program soon.

"I'll take all of my official visits after the season, but I think my parents are wanting to set up an unofficial visit to go see a game at Oklahoma State here pretty soon," he said. "They wanted to go watch a game there and see their stadium and facilities. Other than that I really still don't have any plans for official visits right now."

Edwards mentioned that Missouri has entered into the fray for his services, but is yet to extend an offer. He indicated that after Texas Tech, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M were the programs on his trail the hardest. With rumors continuously swirling about Edwards commitment to the Red Raiders, he once again didn't hesitate to clarify where he stands.

"Oh, no sir. Nothing has changed. I'm still with Tech. I always told the coaches, though, that I was going to do what's best for me and that I would probably take more than one visit just so I could make sure I've checked out my options," he said. "I went on the visit on March 13th and I liked what I saw so I committed to Texas Tech. I'm still happy with my decision, but like I've always said, my parents and I both want to make sure we've explored all of my options before it's all done. Nothing has changed with me and Tech, though. I'm still a Red Raider."

Edwards committed to Texas Tech in March over offers from Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, Houston, Louisville, Oklahoma State, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, and Utah.
