Is CMU still in the mix for Valdez Showers?
Central Michigan was one of the first schools to offer Madison Heights Madison (MI) athlete ]Valdez Showers, and since that point that talented Showers has seen his recruitment skyrocket like no other player in the Midwest.
Auburn, Cincinnati, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Toledo and Wisconsin have all offered, and recently Iowa and Ball State joined the mix.
"I'm up to 12 offers," said Showers. "Iowa just offered me yesterday, and their coach is really cool. He's from the state of Michigan, and that was a cool connection to talk to him about. I just asked him about the transition from Michigan to Iowa, and he basically told me if that's something I want to do, the move is pretty simple."
In addition to Iowa, numerous other schools have made in-school visits to Showers this month.
let me think for a second, there have been a lot of schools" said Showers as he jogged his memory. "Stanford just stopped by today, then Penn State, Purdue, Alabama, Auburn, Central Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan, Western Michigan, Ball State, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Cincinnati. Those schools have all stopped by."
And having in-school visits has been an experience all in its own.
it's been the best," added Showers. "At the same time it motivates you having all these big time programs stop by, and it just lets you know that you still need to put a lot of work in and continue to improve."
Have any of those schools made an early impression on Showers?
"You know, I was just introduced to Penn State and I haven't had a chance to visit there yet, but that's a program I'm very intrigued by. And then of course Alabama, Coach (Bobby) Williams just stopped by the other day and he used to be the head coach at Michigan State, so that was cool to talk to him about and Alabama has been real impressive. Coach Williams was actually in the same time as the guys from Michigan State, so that was a little interesting," laughed Showers.
As many Central Michigan fans know by now, Valdez's brother Valtorrey Showers is on the roster at CMU and the two recently had a chance to spend some time with each other when Valtorrey came home for a short summer break.
"He's been doing pretty good," said Valdez. "We were working out when he got back and just going out to the field and running routes and things. He just tells me to stay humble throughout the recruiting process and stay focused."
With that connection, the Chippewas have a trump card and are still in consideration.
"You know, my brother goes there, so I know CMU is always there," said Showers. "They're always in the back of my head."
In addition to a busy spring and the normal demands of recruiting, Valdez also plans on taking a few trips to camps as part of the Detroit Elite bus trip, but does not have any concrete plans to camp anywhere yet.
