Showers gets offer from Spartans

Earlier this week Michigan State extended a scholarship offer to Valdez Showers of Madison Heights Madison High School. The 6-foot-0, 180-pound prospect is one of the fastest and most explosive athletes in Michigan for the class of 2011. SpartanMag.com spoke with Showers about his recent offer and his future plans.

Showers, who SpartanMag.com ranks as the #8 player in Michigan for the class of 2011, was in East Lansing earlier this week to check out the Michigan State program.

"I went up there for a spring practice on Tuesday and I talked with Coach Dantonio," Showers said. "I was on the field and Coach Dantonio told me that he wanted to offer me a scholarship. It was very exciting to pick up and offer from State. I smiled as soon as Coach Dantonio said it. It made me feel like I am on the right track and at the same time it gave me motivation to work even harder because State is a top notch school."

Showers was also impressed with how the practice itself was run.

"The practice was real smooth and for it to be the first spring practice they had everything together," he said "I had a chance to talk with Coach Narduzzi and Coach Barnett."

The offer from Michigan State comes on the heels of Showers having one of the best performances at the MichiganPreps.com combine. At that event he clocked a 4.27 forty-yard dash (hand timed). SpartanMag.com had him on our watch at 4.42 and 4.44 seconds. Those were the fastest times we clocked that day. Showers talked about his offers and his upcoming plans.

"I believe that makes six offers right now," he said. "I am planning on going to Northwestern, Toledo, Wisconsin, Cincinnati and Central Michigan over spring break. I also will try and make it back up to State for their spring game."

Showers not only put up impressive numbers as a running back for Madison Heights Madison last fall, but he also excelled on defense. Most teams are recruiting him to be a lockdown cornerback at the next level. Showers' size and speed will allow him to cover both smaller slot receivers as well as bigger pro-style wideouts.

Showers plans on hitting a few more camps and combines this spring. He also is running track for Madison Heights Madison High and should win plenty of races. Interestingly, his favorite race is the 400, which is considered the most physically challenging event.

The Spartans current lack of depth at cornerback means that they will need to sign several high-level prospects at that position for the class of 2011. A player like Showers would be an outstanding addition to the class and he would have a legitimate shot to compete for a spot in the two-deeps early on.

SpartanMag.com will be sure to keep Michigan State fans updated on the latest recruiting news on this top 10 prospect for the class of 2011.
