TYLER- TheOldCoach.com's top ranked Class 4A team in Texas again flexed their muscle against a 5A opponent on Saturday and this time it was on the road as the Longview Lobos (2-0) routed the Tyler Lee Red Raiders (0-2) 31-7 in the final game of the Trinity Mother Frances East Texas Classic at Rose Stadium. Longview's defense was stifling all night holding Tyler Lee to just 183 total yards and pitching a shutout until the games final minutes.
Longview got a balanced offensive effort from its star players as Aaron Johnson accounted for 98 passing yards and a touchdown strike, 35 rushing yards and 16 receiving yards. RB Tyler McCray led all rushers with 92 yards on 10 carries, while WR Carey Fortson had 5 receptions for 75 yards and he scored on a sensational 34 yard run on a reverse.
Longview opened the scoring by marching down the field as on the game's second play McCray broke off a 34 yard run to put the Lobos in business. K Kyle Jenkins nailed a 40 yard field goal and LHS jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Tyler Lee later in the quarter marched inside Longview territory as Chris Dinkins had the drive's big play with a 38 yard catch and run where he reversed field on a very fast Lobos defense, but a bobbled snap on the field goal try prevented the Red Raiders from evening things up.
Longview extended the lead to 10-0 midway through the second quarter as LHS marched 12 plays for 74 yards ending in a two yard scoring plunge Da'Cedric Hunt who had two short scoring runs on the night.
LHS started to break the game open in third quarter with Hunt scoring for the second time on the night making it 17-0. In the fourth quarter Fortson scored on the ground to make it 24-0. The Longview defense continued to harass QB Luke Wagoner forcing several errant throws and they held RB Da Da Brown to just 40 yards on 9 carries. Keylon Shaw closed the scoring out for the green and gold with a 15 yard touchdown pass from Johnson to make it 31-0. With the backups in Tyler Lee managed a score for the final margin of 31-7.
