September 23, 2010
It's easy to call this a state-ment weekend.
After all, we'll learn a little bit more about how teams stand in Pennsylvania (No. 91 Central Catholic vs. Woodland Hills), Alabama (No. 4 Hoover vs. Gadsden City), Ohio (No. 77 Moeller vs. St. Xavier) and Texas (No. 22 Abilene vs. Longview).
Not to mention our Game of the Week in Massachusetts (Brockton vs. Xaverian Brothers).
But the most interesting matchup may involve a single team from Nevada.
No. 41 Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman is the undisputed top team in the state. In football - and likely basketball and baseball, too.
Because of it, the Gaels need to measure themselves against out-of-state competition. An opening-game loss to Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton let them know they aren't a Top 10 team. This week, a trip to No. 29 Concord (Calif.) De La Salle figures to let them know where they stand in the Top 100.
Don't get us wrong, we love the intrastate matchups - and we'll see more of them each week as teams figure out where they stand locally. (For De La Salle, that moment ultimately may come in a CIF bowl game in December.)
But it's nice to get one more interstate battle - a game that figures to be the biggest of the year for Bishop Gorman.
With that, a look at five of the top games in the country:
