Mustangs, Team Detroit in Sweet 16 at AMC
BLOOMINGTON - A trio of Michigan State commitments from the class of 2010 took the court at Assembly Hall on the campus of Indiana University Saturday during action at the Adidas May Classic.
The Michigan Mustangs, led by guard Keith Appling and center Alex Guana turned in a 2-0 record and won their pool. After defeating Gateway Basketball in their first game at 8 a.m., the Mustangs came back and defeated Indiana Elite 70-62 to win their pool.
The Mustangs earned a bye in elimination-round play Saturday evening and were scheduled to play their next game Sunday morning at 9:15.
Appling, who moved up to No. 41 in the updated Rivals.com rankings earlier in the week, served notice that he is not done climbing his way up the charts with an impressive 19-point effort against Indiana Elite. Appling took the ball to the hole numerous times against Indiana Elite, often splitting a pair of defenders and getting a number of three-point play opportunities. Appling was at his best early in the second half when Indiana Elite cut the Mustang lead to four points. Appling reeled off five straight points including a three-point play that helped the Mustangs regain a double-digit lead.
Along with leading the team in scoring, Appling also dropped a number of dimes as he finished the game with six assists. Appling found his future Spartan teammate Gauna down the stretch as Guana threw down a pair of thundering dunks that helped the Mustangs open up a 13-point lead in the late stages of the game.
