Hokies pursue in-state walk-on OL
The Hokies are one of many schools taking an interest in a lineman from Virginia. The 6-foot-6, 265-pounder is getting a serious look for a walk-on spot from Virginia Tech along with other BCS schools.
"Of the bigger schools,I'm hearing from Virginia, Virginia Tech, Florida State and Vanderbilt," Richmond (Va.) Godwin offensive tackle Ted Kefalas said. "They are just presenting preferred walk-on spots and say they'd love to have me.
"A lot of them are saying they'll redshirt me my freshman year to get me heavier."
Kefalas is intrigued by the walk-on possibilities.
"I'm definitely thinking about it," he said. "I'd like to play the best football I can play at the best school academically for me. I'm looking for whatever school fits that mold where I can continue my college football career."
Meanwhile, I-AAs and the Ivy League are also interested.
"They're saying they'll probably offer me coming up, they usually wait on their offensive linemen," he said. "I have taken unofficial visits to Georgetown, Elon and Richmond.
"A lot of those recruiters are coming by the school and trying to set up official visits. I'm still doing my research to find which one is the best for me."
With interest from numerous levels of football, does Kefalas like anybody?
"Right now my favorites are probably Richmond, Elon and some of the Ivy League like Princeton and Harvard," he said. "I just love Richmond and Elon, they are so close. They provide a chance to compete for a championship every year. The academic standards of the Ivy League are good and they play good football too."
On the field this past season, Kefalas helped Godwin to a 5-5 record.
"We had a new coach, individually I felt like I got stronger and quicker," he said. "My overall knowledge of the tackle position improved from playing my junior year, that was my first year playing offensive tackle. I felt like my footwork got better too."
